Everything about the U.S. Open in New York City is an triumph of an experience. From the Ralph Lauren Polo boutiques, the official outfitter of the 2018 matches, to the exclusive American Express fan experience and Mercedes-Benz venues, to the excellence of the players, themselves, the annual event and the vast Bille Jean King National Tennis Center on which the massive festival-like experience itself takes place is a must-attend on the social calendar of many. And it is this powerful backdrop that served as the invitation-only announcement of a special, new tennis center planned in Florida.

Indeed, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau held an exclusive reception at the Overlook Lounge on the grounds of the Open.  The American Tennis & Education Foundation (ATEF) took the opportunity to invite key influencers and philanthropists in order to raise awareness and support for the  American Tennis Association (ATA) National Training Complex and its 2019 groundbreaking.

While guests enjoyed all-inclusive dining that included choices of Peking Duck wraps to lamb kebabs and hand-crafted cocktails, they were given an intimate look at a complex that is poised to bring the rich history of African-American participation in tennis to one central location.

The facility is intended to be home to a 20,000 foot Black Tennis Hall of Fame, hold the ATA/ATEF headquarters, a larger center court with a 3000 seating capacity, more than 20 auxiliary courts, a clubhouse with locker room, a treatment and fitness center, as well as a 125-room hotel for athletes, their families and visitors to stay during tournaments.

The ambitious approach was further detailed by Albert Tucker, Vice President, Multicultural Business Development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau after an extension video presentation regarding the impetus and direction for the project. There are a number of ways to support the future Center from building name dedication to purchasing an engraved brick with one’s name on it. 

Celebrating the history from which such prolific athletes as the Williams sister pull, this Center will be one-to-watch and support in its growth.
